2024 MOCK PANELS

We are very pleased to offer again this year the opportunity for Queer|Art|Mentorship applicants and alumni of the program to participate in the 2024 Queer|Art Mock Panels. The aim of our mock panel workshop series is to help our community of artists sharpen their skills in submitting applications and project proposals by going through that process in a trial environment. Artists submit materials as if they were applying for something (a grant, a residency, etc.) and get get 10 minutes of dedicated feedback on their submission.

Queer|Art Mock Panels are inspired by and modeled on the “mock panel” format developed by LJ Roberts at the New School, and have been organized into four different creative fields (Literature, Performance, Film, and Visual Art). Each panel will last approximately 90 minutes:

Visual Art Mock Panel with Vivian Crockett & Evan Garza
Tuesday, July 9, 6pm-7:30pm EST

Performance Mock Panel with Taja Cheek & TBA
Thursday, July 11, 6pm-7:30pm EST

Film Mock Panel with Lucila Moctezuma & Mev Luna
Tuesday, July 16, 6-7:30pm EST

Literature Mock Panel with Jaye Elizabeth Elijah & Kay Gabriel
Thursday, July 18, 6-7:30pm EST

Note: No RSVP required, all workshops via the same link

We recognize the potential for those whose work is *not* being reviewed to learn as much from those whose work is. Therefore, we have opted to make the panels open for observation by a limited capacity of QAM artists and those intending to apply to QAM for the 2024 program cycle. Absolutely no recording will be allowed.

The Mock Panels have been hosted virtually for the last three years, and the panels have inspired many eye-opening conversations between artists and reviewers that helped demystify a process of adjudication that generally takes place in private behind closed doors. It has been illuminating for us to observe how quickly applications are parsed and to note what kinds of techniques are most effective in conveying an artist’s ideas and intentions.

These blog entries below enumerates some of the things we’ve learned over the years of doing the Mock Panel series with lots of great tips for artists:
