QUEER|ART|AWARDS is an initiative of grants, prizes, and residencies that includes a spectrum of support—monetary and otherwise—for LGBTQ+ artists.

ILLUMINations grant for black trans women visual artists

Developed and named in partnership with Mariette Pathy Allen, Aaryn Lang, and Serena Jara, this annual $10,000 grant, awarded to draw attention to an existing body of work, sheds light on the under-recognized contributions of Black trans women visual artists and provides critical support to their continuing work. Winning artists will receive professional development resources and further guidance to bolster their creative development.

Barbara Hammer Lesbian Experimental Filmmaking Grant

This $6,000 grant is awarded to self-identified lesbians for making visionary moving-image art. The grant, named in honor of legendary filmmaker Barbara Hammer, is supported directly by funds provided by Hammer and administered through Queer|Art every other year by lesbians for lesbians, with a rotating panel of judges.

Queer|ArT|Prize

Made possible through a partnership with HBO, Queer|Art|Prize presents two $10,000 awards to LGBTQ artists based in the United States: one for Sustained Achievement and the other for Recent Work. With a Nominating Committee of 20 esteemed arts professionals from around the country, Queer|Art|Prize confirms the impact of our programming and support on a national level.

Eva Yaa Asantewaa Grant
for Queer Women(+)
Dance Artists

This annual $7,000 grant is awarded to queer women for making cutting-edge dance and/or movement-based performance work. Named in honor of visionary dance curator, critic, and educator Eva Yaa Asantewaa, the grant seeks to highlight the important contributions queer women have made to dance throughout history. Queer|Art strongly encourages self-identified women, gender-nonconforming, and non-binary artists to apply.

Robert giard grant for emerging lgbtq+ photographers

Through a partnership with The Robert Giard Foundation, Queer|Art’s first international grant of $10,000 supports the creation of work by emerging LGBTQ+ photographers whose projects address issues of sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ+ identity. Previously known as The Robert Giard Fellowship (2008-2018), the relaunched grant is named in honor of photographer Robert Giard (1939-2002), a portrait, landscape, and figure photographer whose work focused on LGBTQ+ lives and issues.

PAMELA SNEED AWARD FOR BLACK QUEER|ART|MENTORSHIP ARTISTS AND ORGANIZERS

The Pamela Sneed Award for Black Queer|Art|Mentorship Artists & Organizers is a $10,000 annual award that acknowledges Black QAM Mentors and Fellows who uplift critical histories of Black queer mentorship and exemplify steadfast commitment to values shared by the QAM community. The award highlights Black queer artists within the Mentorship community that uphold guiding principles and practices like intergenerational exchange, collective care, creative resilience, preservation of Black queer legacies, and an engagement with grassroots organizing within their creative practice and beyond.
